The point is 1,670 miles from the nearest land, and is a popular target for satellites that are deliberately brought back down to Earth—at the bottom of the ocean here lie the remains of 145 Russian cargo supply ships, 5 European transfer vehicles, 6 Soviet Salyut stations, and the space station Mir.
