FACT OF THE DAY: In 1943, the Army Corps of Engineers began building a scale model of the entire Mississippi River Basin near Jackson, Mississippi. Constructed in part by German and Italian prisoners of war, the model covers over 200 acres and recreates over 400,000 acres of actual land. It was used to simulate flooding for almost 25 years and helped the Army to predict and prevent flooding on multiple occasions.
