FACT OF THE DAY: Any song or poem that uses what’s known as the “common metre”—four rhyming lines that alternate between iambic tetrameter and iambic trimeter—can be sung to the tune of any other song also using the common metre. For example, you can sing most Emily Dickinson poems to the tune of Gilligan’s Island.
