FACT OF THE DAY: Under perfect conditions, particles of molten lava from volcanoes are sometimes blown into the air and stretched into thin hair-like strands, as little as 0.5 mm across and as long as 2 meters. These strands are known as “Pele’s hair” and can sometimes be found in clumps near the rim of volcanoes.
