FACT OF THE DAY: An opossum isn’t acting when it plays dead; the reaction is involuntary. The opossum's body stiffens, it releases a foul odor, and its heartrate reduces by half. While playing dead the opossum can be prodded, turned over, and carried without reaction. The opossum regains consciousness within 1-4 hours.
