FACT OF THE DAY: On January 1, 1940 in Edinburgh, Scotland, thick fog reduced visibility to zero. Fearing that German intelligence would take advantage of the poor conditions and conduct a bombing run, the War Office ordered two local soccer clubs to proceed with their regularly-scheduled game. The BBC announcer was ordered to call the game as normal, even though he couldn’t see any of the action on the field, and so he invented an entire game which lasted 15 minutes longer than the actual contest. After the game, one of the players was found guarding his position and calling out to his teammates even though they had all departed to the locker room.
