FACT OF THE DAY: During a 1970 bank shutdown in Ireland, the shortage of checks led people to write an IOU on any available piece of paper and affix a postage stamp as a sign of legitimacy. The ersatz checking system lasted for several months before the banks reopened and then honored the amateur checks.
