FACT OF THE DAY: The first recorded instance of a villain tying a protagonist to a railroad track came in the 1867 play “Under the Gaslight” by Augustin Daly. In the original instance, it was the hero who was tied up, and the heroine who came to rescue him. Future iterations reversed the gender roles.
