FACT OF THE DAY: The term “designated driver” was virtually unknown in the United States until the 1980s, when an advocacy group convinced Hollywood studios to introduce the concept via “product placement." Designated drivers were used as plot points on episodes of Cheers, L.A. Law, The Cosby Show, and Roseanne. Public awareness of the concept skyrocketed, and drunk-driving fatalities dropped by 25% from 1988 to 1992.
