FACT OF THE DAY: On April 1, 1974, residents of Sitka, Alaska woke to the sight of smoke rising from Mt. Edgecumbe, a dormant volcano overlooking the city. A Coast Guard helicopter sent to investigate found an enormous pile of tires set aflame inside the caldera, and next to it, the words “APRIL FOOLS” written in 50-foot-high letters.
