FACT OF THE DAY: Washington Irving coined the nickname “Gotham” for New York City in 1807. The inspiration came from a folk tale, “The Wise Men of Gotham,” about villagers in Gotham, Nottinghamshire, England who feigned madness to avoid a visit from the king. The nickname proved popular even though Irving wasn’t being complimentary.
