FACT OF THE DAY: The song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” began as a Zulu marching chant which founder Robert Baden-Powell recorded in the first Boy Scout handbook in 1908. The song’s melody was improvised by Zulu singer Solomon Linda in the 1920s, and the Zulu phrase “Uyimbube” (“You are a lion”) was mistranslated to “Wimoweh” by the folk group The Weavers when they re-recorded the song in 1951.
