FACT OF THE DAY: “Rock and roll” originally referred to the normal movement aboard an oceangoing ship. In the early 20th century it was used as a euphemism for sex and to describe the spiritual fervor of black church revivals. In the 1940s it began to be used in musical contexts before being used to describe an entire genre by Cleveland DJ Alan Freed in 1951.
