FACT OF THE DAY: Mapmakers often add nonexistent features to their maps to guard against copyright infringement. The General Drafting Company did so in 1937, mapping the fictional town of Agloe, NY. To their surprise, Agloe sprung into being sometime in the 1950s, when an unknown entrepreneur opened the “Agloe General Store” at the road intersection where Agloe was supposed to be.
