FACT OF THE DAY: There is a 240-square-kilometer area of Mongolia known as the “Great Taboo,” which was declared to be sacred by Genghis Khan in the 13th century, and was inhabited only by a special guard from Khan’s death in 1227 until 1924. The Soviet Union declared the same area to be highly restricted. The first archeologists finally visited the area in 1989.
