2-WEEK WORKSHOPS:

AUDITIONING FOR IMPROV SHOWS/THEATERS Wed. March 12 & 19 830-10pm
This workshop will teach you the skills, temperament, level of support and polish you need to get hired and noticed in an audition where your improv skills are the focus. Wether you are interested in pursuing a career at Second City or Boom Chicago, thinking of troupe auditioning at iO or ColdTowne or would like to be cast in an improvised show elsewhere in Austin, the insight into how you are perceived by the auditioners can be immeasurable. Dave has been witness to thousands of improv auditions at where he has helped recruit, hire and direct hundreds of actors and improvisers. If possible, bring a headshot and resume for review.

TURNING YOUR IMPROV INTO SKETCH Wed. April 2 & 9 830-10pm
How do you take a really good improv scene and turn into a really good sketch? How do you take a really bad improv scene with a really good nugget of an idea into a really good sketch? How do you take 10 mediocre sketches and develop a really good show? By Listening, Collaborating, Killing the Baby, Following the Joke and Feeling the Beats, all while avoiding Screwing the Pooch. Dave has written, directed and performed sketch shows at Second CIty and Boom Chicago with some of the best Prime Time TV, Late Nite TV and Web-based sketch writer/performers working today.

FIND THE GAME & HEIGHTENING THE GAME Wed. April 16 & 23 830-10pm
How do you walk into a scene? When and How should you walk into someone else's scene? Should you Walk In or Tag Out or Sweep Edit? How do you know what is funny about your own scene? This class will help you laser in on what is funny about your improv scene and where the possibilities lay for what to do next AND help you articulate that point. What if you know what’s funny about your scene...then what? What do you do with that information? Do you Freeze up when you know you need to turn on the juice? This class will also teach you about patterns, games and heightening past that plateau where the scenes starts to get boring and everyone is looking at you holding the ball.

$50 for each 2-week workshop

“Dave is great at getting you to actively reflect on your personal play-style and helps you identify ways to sharpen the skills you’re already good at, as well as getting you comfortable with the idea of wielding the skills you may not use that often.” -Adam Trabka, Bad Boys

“Brutal diagnostics, targeted exercises specific to my needs and honest feedback made this class a crucial building block for my improv.” - Sarah Marie Curry, Girls!Girls!Girls!

“Dave was able to identify key tendencies of mine that were hindering my improv and target them. He walked me through my own thought process, invited me to explore other ideas, and then gave me the support I needed to feel comfortable when attempting new territory in my scenes. Awesome. I watched my improv and the improv of my fellow classmates improve two-fold. It was inspiring.” - Ruby Willmann, the Escorts

“I've had more instruction from Dave than any other teacher, and I still benefit from his coaching. He identifies and articulates aspects of your play that everyone else has missed, and I love the collegial atmosphere he creates. When you walk out of one of Dave's workshops, you not only feel like a better improviser, you also feel like a valued contributor to a working artistic community.” - John Ratliff, Chronicle’s Best of Austin Improv Coach
If you disrespect your character, or play it just for laughs, it will sell some gags, but it's all technique.
It's like watching a juggler-- you'll be impressed by it, but it's not going to touch you in anyway. "
-Steve Coogan
