FACT OF THE DAY: The term Pfeilstorch (German for "arrow stork") refers to a stork which returns to Europe with an arrow stuck in its body after wintering in Africa. 25 Pfeilstorches have been recorded; the earliest, captured in 1822, helped to prove that birds migrate to other regions during the winter, rather than (as legend held) turning into mice or hibernating at the bottom of the ocean.
