Improv Junkie in Austin for just two days... thoughts?

Post by MommyRock »

Howdy Austin Improv,

I'm an improv junkie living in a wasteland where the only improv group we had locally just fell apart. I went through Level 1 training at Second City over the summer and now I'm hooked. I'm travelling solo the last weekend in January to Austin for a wedding and thought, "Hey, I'll be near civilization again... I should see if I can find a drop-in class."

So any suggestions on drop-in classes in Austin during the day on Saturday, January 25, 2014? Or even just an acting class for newbies?

And what else should I do while I'm in town in the theater/improv/comedy scene? I'm booked up Saturday night for a wedding thing (the whole reason I'm coming to town), but Friday night and Saturday during the day are wide open. And this Mama don't get away from the husband and 3 kids very often, so I want to make every second count.

Thanks!

Deleted my prior response, I thought you meant THIS weekend.

Bad Boys is a very solid Friday-night recommendation. Also it looks like Pgraph's Jan 24th show at the Hideout will also feature Midnight Society, so that's two of the best troupes in the land playing back to back. http://www.hideouttheatre.com/shows/PGraphPresents
Can't go wrong with either choice. And any improvisers would be happy to talk shop after the show if you introduce yourself.

As for classes, I know Dave Buckman is doing a three-week workshop, of which the 25th is one:

If a 5:30 finish time isn't too late, then maybe email Dave, explain the situation, and see if he can get you a discount for just coming in for the one day.

Those are the improviser-specific recommendations I have, of course there's a long list of touristy things you should try to do while you're here.

Thanks so much for posting this master class. In truth, I'm not experienced enough to be in a master class. But this link lead me to email TNM and found out there's a whole conference/festival the whole weekend I'm going to be in Austin. How awesome!

They don't have the schedule announced yet, but are supposed to later this week. Here's the link...

The registration and class schedule just went live...

If you're going, look for me. I'll be the happily weird, middle-aged broad who makes way too many poop jokes (I blame living with 4 males, 3 of them aged 12 and under).

Thanks!

I'll be teaching a workshop on musical improv at 11:30am that Saturday if you're interested! I look forward to meeting you! :)
