This winter, the Puppet Improv Project (PIP) rings in the holiday season at The Institution Theater with a relaunch of it’s family friendly musical, “Elf Employment.” Each night, the colorful cast of mischievous imps and woodland creatures will brighten the stage with a musical and interactive situational comedy based on suggestions from the audience about the life of elves in Santa’s Workshop as they head on a magical adventure through a winter wonderland.
The cast and crew of “Elf Employment” includes improvising puppeteers, singers – tried and true veteran of improvised musical theater – and our musical director and improvising musician, Ammon Taylor. These performers are joined each show by a new special guest star, playing the role of Santa Claus. The performers are all working together to spontaneously create a new kid oriented show each night, set in the landscape of Santa’s workshop at the North Pole.
Musical Director Ammon Taylor is a classically trained pianist currently pursuing a degree in Music Composition at the University of Texas. In addition to being actively involved in Austin's improvised theatre community, he writes music and performs for the Paramount Theatre's Literacy to Life program, and was recently the pianist and composer for ZACH's production of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid".
The Puppet Improv Project (PIP) started as an experiment in 2009 when the founder, Sara Farr, spent the year exploring puppet improvisation, and produced a kids show, a long-form musical, an all-women’s short-form show, and a series of appearances at “No Shame Theater.” Since then, the PIP has continued to grow and pursue its mission - to foster an interest in puppetry and improvisation in Austin. In 2011 the PIP became a sponsored project under the Austin Creative Alliance. With a yearly calendar of shows and workshops, the PIP continues to introduce Austin audiences to puppetry, while expanding the company’s performance skills and puppet technologies.
