Casting for a smart political satire variety show at Coldtowne Theater on Thursdays in October.
Wanted: Politically passionate sketch groups/videos, Improv troupes, and Comedians
The hosts, Duran & Johnson will call a Special Session each week to help them understand a political issue or theme. Each act will perform and Duran & Johnson will take inspiration from those acts, (instead of a suggestion from the audience) to see if they now understand the issue. When their set is over, the other acts of the evening will evaluate/critique whether or not they “got it right”, in a good natured, bantering way.
Themes and dates:
10/3 GENDER EQUALITY/WOMEN'S RIGHTS: The idea that less than 100 years ago women were not allowed to vote seems almost insane. And yet, here it is 2013 and they are still underpaid, underrepresented, and unable to fully escape the shadow of institutionalized sexism. Our goal is to bring to light the complex relationship between modern culture and the women who live in it.
10/10 LIQUIDATING SEXUALITY: More and more people are classifying themselves as gay/bi/queer/pansexual and other types of non-traditional sexual identities. Some are pushing forth a new definition of sexual identity, one that is much more liquid and tailored to the individual rather than arbitrarily assigned due to genital organs. What's it like to swim so strongly against the societal current, withstanding persecution and propaganda, all for the sake of personal happiness?
10/17 THE AMERICAN THREAD: America! America! Land of the free, home of the brave. We are the home of hotdogs and hand grenades, of the idea that every man is created equal and the idea of putting a whole cooked chicken in a can and selling it. Yes sir, we are a little bit of everything. But what does it all add up to? Let's examine the pastiche of American life through the eyes of those who make up its parts, and through the eyes of those who don't, and see if we can't brush upon the red, white and blue colored thread holding us all as one.
10/24 LET'S ASK SIRI: Everyone's been there. You're having a nice conversation with someone when all of a sudden they pull out their smart-phone and start poking at it. Technology has given us the vast totality of human knowledge at the touch of our fingertip and all it cost us was a little interpersonal isolation. It has given us the ability to connect and easily stay in touch with our loved ones, at the cost of our habits being digitized and recorded so that others can more easily sell us stuff. It has (allegedly) allowed us stop dozens of domestic terror plots, at the cost of the government having knowledge of our whereabouts and connections with others. Are they a fair price to pay, or are we being ripped off? Is the erosion of the Right To Privacy an inevitability, or a battle to be won? Should we just ask Siri?
10/31 HOW TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA (OR NOT): The divide between classes grows every single day. Social mobility was once a great societal promise, but now it seems to be a great societal lie. With this topic we would like to explore not only the dichotomies between members of different economic classes, but the junctures as well. We all love, hate, and cry some just do it with a few more zeroes at the end of their checking account balance. Let's side-step the classic stereotypes of lazy poor and uncaring rich and take an honest look at what it means to have and to have-not.
Please submit your interest to brinlee.productions@gmail.com by 9/18/13. Include the dates/themes that you are available and interested in.
