Why Andy Crouch is (is) awesome
I can't say it enough. Andy Crouch is awesome.
I got a chance to teach with him the other day and he has really come in to his own and he taught me a trick or two.
Andy has the amazing quality of being passionate about improv and laid back about everything else. So when he was given full reign over The Hideout, he did a great job being open, flexible and supportive of any improv idea. And was really instrumental in having improv flourish there. Andy really lives a lot of the improv principles.
Andy is great at his job, will answer his cell phone at any time, does a lot of work that none of us see (like dealing with all the renters and other Hideout staff) and still has time to produce shows and promote improv to the public.
And, have you seen his new jeans and his new shoes? They are awesome.
Props and Kudos to Andy.

The goddamn best Austin improv classes!

No you don't, the beard tickles.
Trust me.
I've been a thorn in Andy's side for going on two years now and I have to say that my growth during that periood is a fine example of what someone like Andy can do to an individual and community. Read that however you want.
Also, Andy is an awesome guy, a mad-talented improviser, a visionary, and a damned dirty hippie and I love him for it all.

His new jeans confuse me, because they're new...but came with holes in them. I don't understand.
But yeah, Andy introduced me to the world of improv and was my first improv teacher. He got me hooked, and for that I either owe him a hug or a punch in the nose.

Andy is very hard working, knowledgeable, humble and pleasant to be around. He taught me the first three levels of improv classes and I still remember most of those fundamentals today. (although I sometimes forget them while actually on stage) He is one of the most dedicated and passionate members of the AIC yet he's able to remain laid back and approachable. He also happens to be dating a very good friend of mine so he can't be all bad.

Andy is my favorite improvisor :-) He is a good teacher too, he sets up a safe and fun environment for beginner improvisers to learn the joy of improv (like Shana does). And I love watching his character work in shows. And he's just so hot when he's on stage.
He truly believes that improv can change the world, and is doing his part in making that happen. I'm proud of him.
And yes, he answers the cell phone to the hideout ALL the time. *frown*

Before Andy Crouch we used to play Micetro for 4-8 people with the improvisors often outnumbering the audience. Often we didn't even have an audience and the show would get cancelled--then my drunk college finally friends would show up at 10:45 but it would be too late. Everyone was already pouting in the green room. Andy really has changed things. I am happy he's around town.

Andy rocks my world.
Every time I've shared the stage with him, it's been enjoyable.
And he's a great Maestro director, and made me feel VERY comfortable when I wanted to direct Maestro. In fact, the whole time, he felt like my big brother, showing me some porn or smoking my first cigar with me.
Thanks Andy! You rock.

Andy Crouch once stopped me mid-sentence when I said the words, "We'd like to do a show where we..." He just wanted to know when and what time.
That was one of my first experiences with him and I still tell that story to people when they ask why I'm in love with this city so much.
Big fat permanent sticky thank you's to Andy Crouch.

Andy is a champ. I appreciated how he provided me incredibly reasonable rates to allow me to do my workshops up at the Hideout. And better yet, he just committed fully to participating in them.
I remember in my last Austin workshop, he and Andrea Young did this awesome scene as a brother and sister. It was just vulnerable, beautiful and funny. It was just one of those incredibly simple scenes, where you just saw how these two people genuinely each other but really lacked the language/ability to express it. I wanted to end the workshop there so I could just end my Austin teaching career on that note. It wasn't the perfect scene of improv, but it just showed me how much he (and Andrea) understood and captured the type of scenework that I want to teach. I've always been used to seeing him play fast, detached and clever. But seeing him work his ass off in my workshops reminded me how relentless he is to his craft.

I met Andy many years ago the first time and several years ago the second time. The second time we shared the stage as Amish scientists. Granted, he has given me a hard time about my ComedySportz origins, but he appreciates all who contribute to the art and fosters the learning of those who aspire to contribute.
It is rare that you come accross somebody with such a big heart and that makes us lucky to know him.
