How are you going to make 2013 the best year?

Everything else, basically.

How are you going to make 2013 the best year?

Post by Roy Janik »

The spambot brought up a good question.

How are you going to make 2013 the best year?

Personally, I have a two-pronged approach:

* Get healthy.
* Reduce stress.

The plans for both of those things are a little more involved, but that's the plan.

What about you? It doesn't have to be a resolution. Just a (hopefully sincere) answer to "How are you going to make 2013 the best year?"

i think most of my sadness, frustration, and anxiety in 2012 came from doing something highly unusual for me: making plans. things were going really well for the first few months of the year and i bet on them continuing in that manner and made a number of plans regarding my personal and professional life. when those fell through, i was still a bit attached to them and my previous hopefulness turned toxic. so i'm going to be a bit more adaptable to the moment and circumstances as they rise. i clearly can't function like a normal person, so i need to find a system that works for me. ;)

also, more sleep and exercise, and less beer and fast food...okay, less fast food. :P

Trying to be more open and honest in all of my relationships. Even when it causes trouble it seems to be the better long term solution.

Also, really really trying to let go of worry. Even if bad stuff happens if you meet it cheerfully everything seems to go so much better.

I've lived in poverty for my entire twenties. So I really want to tackle that, balancing stability and my creativity-seeking brain.

Of course I've never thought of it as poverty. But thinking back, yes that's exactly what that was.

Also, there's this other more personal resolution regarding a family member & how I treat others. Learning from an experience and lifting others up. I've decided the two resolutions can be tied together easily. Start taking care of myself & I will be able to help even more others. Through bringing them up in improv or otherwise. Settling down within a community & just telling myself I have everything I need.

Some stretch between 2011 & 2012 was my best year ever so it's going to be hard to beat.

For an improv related goal, I'd like to do more stuff in the improv community. With a wife and little daughter on top of a job, it is hard to make a lot of the parties and hang outs. I also can't commit to rehearsals for a lot of shows or going to the Dog & Duck afterwards. So, I don't know many people (or they don't know me) in the community. I'd like to figure out how to get more time just hanging out and getting some good face time with fellow improvisers.

Otherwise...
Be a good Dad
Get Healthy
Finish fixing up my house (this will never end though)

Trying to find more focus on my life. This means:

- less multitasking
- less Pavlovian response to email and phone notifications
- more reading
- possibly some meditation

Hold myself to higher standards where I've been easy on myself. Go easy on myself where I've been having high expectations.

I hope to really dig in to all of my various projects and goals, 110%. No flinching. I need to keep my head in the game. Everyday is an opportunity for progress and growth.

Concrete things:
-Less time on Facebook
-Exercise every day or every other day
-Keep up healthy eating
-Take time to sit back, breathe deeply, and be mindful

Also, I want to find the love in everything. Every scene, every show, every project, every place, every person, every moment. I can be a better Kaci in 2013, I know it.

I'd like to get this new job I'm interviewing for. That'd help with the whole work-life balance.

No more smoking.

Spend more time with my family.

Launch Mandinka into outer space.

Pick up a brand new, never-before-tried skill.

The first paragraph below is what I posted on my Facebook wall for 2013 and is the context of my goals for this year:

My intentions for 2013 are to keep opening my heart, relaxing into life, discovering what brings me joy and allowing myself to have it and to be happy. I have been learning in 2012 that I have paid my dues for pain, sorrow, trauma, etc, etc. and deserve to be happy instead of subconsciously and habitually energetically whoring my soul out to please others in an effort to generate a false since of safety along with hiding my true Self. I am learning that I can still be a light without losing myself and that it is not narcissistic or wrong to shine and focus on being my best because that in itself makes a difference for others. If you ever catch me shutting inward or hiding, feel free to CALL ME ON IT please.

Two things already showed up this year for part of my specific goals. One goal was to be cast in a show/troupe that runs longer than one night and the other is to get fit and reach my goal weight. I am cast in Season Two of Thinning the Herd! Boom.

Other specific goals:
- GIVE more
- LOVE more
- ACCEPT LOVE more
- Read more to keep expanding my mind
- Balance my creative energies between improv, painting and purse design
- Dance and sing... especially dancing (perhaps take a dance or singing class)
-GET OUT of my shell and be social in person... actually open my mouth and engage in meaningful conversation instead of sitting there watching everyone else connect. Outside of Facebook or this forum, I still have trouble letting others "see" me and that I can be a good friend and someone they will enjoy hanging out with instead of someone who just stands around and awkwardly staring and smiling. ha
- JUST SAY FUCK IT and go for whatever makes my heart full

Not selling myself short any longer.
Not allowing myself to be taken advantage of.

In real time reading this I just realized how negative the Nos made this, so...

Overselling myself.
Making my opportunities ADVANTAGEOUS!
Taking every risk when I hear the voice of my father inside my head saying "You shouldn't do that"
