Audition for ColdTowne's "Sci-Fi Saturdays"

Hello Improvisers,

Kyle Sweeney here. I'm directing and producing a show run at ColdTowne this February. I'd like you to come audition to be in the cast!

Title: Sci-Fi Saturdays
Premise: Two specific Sci-Fi themed improv sets and hosted by J.K. Sweeney (himself/myself)
When and Where: Saturdays at 8:30 in February at ColdTowne Theater.

There will be two different audition times at ColdTowne Theater
Sunday 12/9 - 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Wednesday 12/12 - 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Accepting all levels of Sci-Fi geeks and norms (normal people). No prior knowledge of Sci-Fi trivia and troupes are required for any performer- we just need plain ole commitment and passion. I'm looking for fun and supportive performers.

The cast will be expected to attend 6 rehearsals in January and February and perform each Saturday evening in February.

Any idea on what day of the week rehearsals will take place?

I'm sure at least a few of those would be Sunday afternoons, but nothing is set yet.

I'll most likely pick a mutually beneficial time/day once the show is cast and schedules can be more specifically coordinated.

I see we're to bring a prepared piece and then perform it—interesting. Is that just for purposes of auditioning, or will the show have some non-improv elements?

The show is largely improvised with some comedy videos and transitional bit/material written by myself. So the show may have some written non-improv elements, but the cast isn't necessarily responsible for that portion.

The "prepared piece" is three fold...

1) This minute is crafted by you to showcase your personality & comedic sensibility.

2) It shows that you were willing to put in some quantified work in- even for an improv audition- which speaks toward commitment on all levels.

3) Sometimes when you have a lot of talented people auditioning (specifically in an improv-only audition) performances tend to blend together during the process. Since the piece is chosen and performed by you as an individual- it's a way to differentiate yourself. To help color the individual performers' audition.

A solid prepared piece for the audition will help inform the casting process. Obviously if you have a bad improv audition and a stellar prepared piece, it won't get you cast as we're looking mainly at that improv element. I'm just a big fan of doing stuff like this in auditions. It'll be fun to see the creative angles some people choose- so I'd say take some ownership and have fun.

Thanks for all the interest guys! We're got two very nice-sized auditions coming up. But we can always use more folks!

I will tease that one of the improv sets will be called STAR FORCE. It's based on a fun universe that I created with long-time friend Andy Petruzzo. The idea itself is very much inspired by the classic Sci-Fi television shows that follow a starship and it's crew. The obvious nods are to the various Star Trek series, Battlestar Galactica, Space 1999, Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda (starring Kevin Sorbo of Hercules Fame!), maybe even some Seaquest DSV for good measure.

As an improvisor, STAR FORCE is going to be a fun way to create original stuff in the style of a space adventure show - without being to beholden to any specific references and canon of the established space franchises. I'm very excited, but I suppose I have to be.
