Newsweek newsworthy...

Post by mcnichol »

why is it so difficult to find news these days if you live in the US?

(that's the extremely relevant Annie Liebovitz on our cover)

Are you fucking kidding me.

Jesus jumped up Christ.

Is the content totally different as well?

You work your life away and what do they give?
You're only killing yourself to live

Please go back to watching reality television and washed up stars and do not post about the politics of your nation anymore. Trust us, it is for the best. Who wants to think about Bush and war when you can discuss the merits of putting Mark Hamill and Leonard Nimoy on the same Surreal Life? Isn't that more fun?

As far as I know the same Afghantistan article ("The Rise of Jihadistan") is in the US version, but it's just not cover-worthy apparently. It's on the Newsweek/MSN site too.

Can I compromise by watching Tucker Carlson on "Dancing With the Stars"?

I wonder how much of it is public driven though? Would people buy newsweek more if it had the Afghanistan cover?

That's something to consider. Traditionally, blonde white women do market-test higher than international politics and our foreign policy in the Middle East.

I'm disappointed though if journalistic integrity has come down to "What do people want to see" as opposed to "What do people need to know."

They're ultimately trying to get the magazine into peoples' hands and sell more ads. You know that, Bob.

Capitalist media = report whatever's popular so people buy things
Government controlled media = report whatever you want people to think is popular so you can hide the truth.

Either way, intelligent citizens get screwed. Sadly, our capitalist society seems to be rather well-tied to the people in control. So it's a double-edged dildo.

Overly simplified and crass, sure. But then again, so's American politics.

Thank you, I'll be here all week.

Stop making me cry, what with your logic and realism. Can't I just enjoy my warm bath of idealism?

You're dead on though Kareem. I guess it's more just my wish that someone -- SOMEONE -- take the high road sometimes. ...especially when I plainly see that all of the other major markets get the "good" cover. I mean, seriously, what does that say about Joe America? I know what I think it says, but isn't that pretty disheartening? "Hmm, a brown guy with a bazooka, and article about how things are getting worse in Afghanistan... they'll never buy this sh*t. Who's blonde and vaguely in the news this week? Get me a blonde!" (I can only suspect Liebovitz was chosen because she recently shot the baby Scientologist photos.)

There's no liberal or conversative bias in the media these days. It's a bias towards the dumb, the easy, the simple...

But the news is enough to make you cry.. I was upset yesterday when I read the story on Salon on the mother who lost her son. And there are other news that just enrages you.

The normal person wants to go through their day-to-day life being happy and having dinner with their loved ones and watch something funny on TV.

News junkies like us know where to read the news to get something beyond celebrity gossip.
