Speaking unironically and not as part of a bit, the brony thing is real. A friend of mine from college has a boyfriend who is one and it drives her up the wall.
I don't understand the appeal myself, but Todd Vanderwerff, the AV Club's television critic who does their superb Mad Men critiques, actually wrote an interesting defense/analysis of the show for those interested.
