i dont agree with all of this but some of it is very illuminating, especially for people who like to do or direct improv on film.

"Is narrative a problem... at ALL?"
"No."
*Whew*. That settles it.

He's a British lord. That's probably why you were confused.happywaffle wrote:I just realized, for the first time ever, that Christopher Guest is American and not British.
The silver knives are flashing in the tired old cafe. A ghost climbs on the table in a bridal negligee. She says "My body is the life; my body is the way." I raise my arm against it all and I catch the bride's bouquet.

Oh?
What do you mean, John? I want your best. I want you to explain this better than you ever have.ratliff wrote:I just realized, for the first time ever, that Charlie Rose is Ryan Hill.

this was clearly filmed a while ago (coinciding with A Mighty Wind)...i wonder if he's seen any narrative improv since then that's changed his mind.
i've had the "can you train/teach people how to act?" discussion a lot. i think you can cultivate and train the talent that's already there, but i don't think you can "teach" talent out of nothing. so i mostly agree with him on that point.

It's interesting to me that he talks to people instead of auditioning them. I have met a lot of improvisers in passing in Chicago and I haven't figured out a ton of correlation between actions/conversations in real life and show quality. But then maybe that's why I'm not a famous director.
They call me Dollar Bill 'cause I always make sense.
