I personally asked Brad to examine Chris's post and to use his best judgement as to whether he wanted to keep it up there. I stand by that decision and anyone who wants to have a frank discussion about it is welcome to approach me in person or via email.

Goddammit Brett, now I have to put my joke about how only on an improv forum could inviting 4 nerdy white guys to do something be even tenuously considered affirmative action back in this thread.B. I'm not really sure what to say at this point...Maybe Ratliff was right...it may have been foolish to think that we could come to a better understanding here. I should probably just stop because what it sounds like i'm saying is that there's poison in the system and Chris Trew is the only one who has the antidote. The situation is quite complex, and quite frustrating for all sides I'm sure...Again, i'm not too fond of the dismissal of this conversation by people who could easily just not participate if something about it offends their sensibilities, but I digress.
I apologize if something I said has come off as overly negative, or argumentative, or if this seems like an egotistical assertion of myself...My goal is obtaining clarity in the hopes that it will help us all know what is actually going on so that we can stop speculating and move on...and the best way i know to do that is to offer my personal p.o.v. on the matter.
I still feel that we have to be honest with ourselves that as a community we are not all entirely past this yet. I think that continued action to prove that we are willing to work together coming from all sides is a good step towards putting this behind us. The only theater owner I haven't heard from yet is from TNM, and it has been my personal experience that he is the one who I have actually experienced drawing lines in the sand. So, he is the one I am most interested in hearing from.
My whole issue with this drama was that I never wanted to be a part of it. When I moved down here I was told that if I wanted to teach at TNM I couldn't teach or perform elsewhere because it would be confusing for the students. Which I consider to be a choice that, counter to your assertion Jesse, is one where the theater did involve other theaters in town in their decision making process...I believe that there have been other choices like this made since I have been back that are further evidence that, in my opinion, your assertion is not entirely true...if you want the further examples, I could provide them.
I know that Chris works hard, and I think that he deserves the success that comes his way as a result of it. I think that you guys do an incredible job over there of making students feel welcome and supported. I suppose in my mind though I am adverse to the idea of those students being given misinformation in some areas, or that steps have actively been taken to see that they are not encouraged to get involved elsewhere. Perhaps this is a misunderstanding on my part, and you are encouraging them more than I am seeing. I played with a TNM group at CT the other night, and we all got along swimmingly. So, I hope that the case is that the theater's stance is that their students should get involved in whatever feels like it will be a good use of their time...In my personal experience though what the policy claimed to be and what they actually were didn't line up. Hence my skepticism.
I think that there are some other official theater policies that are expressed like "everyone is welcome" that rub me the wrong way because I think that may not be the whole truth in that the actual policy i believe is more like "everyone but the large group of people who either sided with CT during the split or even tried to remain neutral are welcome". ..So, by calling for chris to come forward and explain himself I just want the theater to own up to whatever the official policy actually is so there is no deception.
I know that chris has created a hostile environment over here for himself where he likely won't be commenting on this...that isn't something I personally had anything to do with...and i know the claim is that you aren't concerned with the community, and yet when these issues are discussed different faculty from TNM feel compelled to sound off to clear the air. I feel like since we know that there is still the high potential for speculation to occur around policies that seem questionable to the community at large, that it might help to avoid some of this if you considered addressing some of these things directly before they become weird issues of speculation...like a month ago when questions about how this festival was being cast came up, and I believe the most official response given was from Shyla who said that That portion of the festival had yet to have been finalized. but I know that steph cook had already been emailed and asked to play...so, I have a suspicion that it is likely that the theater may have known already that it would probably be primarily TNM groups...Which is fine...I just would like that decision, and decisions like that to be owned up to sooner rather than later...or to not seem as taken aback by the reaction of the community that more or less feels excluded because it was excluded. I personally didn't feel slighted, but I think that the reactions by some people in the community may not have been expressed in the best way, but were at least understandable.
As far as it being "dishonorable" to do this on the forum...I think that's sort of silly to call my honor into question because that isn't really the issue here...With this issue in particular I would have to go to one side, and then another, and then back...still, I didn't start a thread that said "chris trew, i'm calling you out", and I didn't make any of the decisions surrounding the festival that caused the reaction they did. I was just joining the conversation as it unfolded, and I am primarily motivated by a desire to put all of this drama bullshit behind us. I hear from faculty at all theaters that we are ready to do that, and I very much want that to be true. I will continue to give everyone the benefit of the doubt moving forward...but I guess until I hear from Chris or start to see more inclusive actions I'm going to have a hard time not being at least a little skeptical. Also, on an issue like this that may be personal for me but involves the community at large reacting to the decisions made by your entity, I agree that we shouldn't just "shit talk" one another, but I think that this is still a fairly decent place to have this conversation. I am thankful for the clarity it has brought to me in some areas.
So...I'm sorry if this isn't the place to do this...and I'm sorry if this is offensive to anyone, or if someone feels that I am doing more harm than good here. Jesse, i'm sorry if you or anyone else from TNM feel like this is all wildly inappropriate. I'm trying my best to be honest, and open, and i'm looking for resolution. I will admit now that I quite possibly may have misunderstood some things, or don't have the full story. I sincerely want for the community to work through this though because there is no reason that something that happened between 5 people a few years ago should still be anyone's concern.

so, ummm, has anyone actually been contacted to be a volunteer?
i don't think my application was accepted.

Very well said, Jill. It's extremely seductive. Responding to egotism with egotism feels like justifiable self-defense, but in the end, it's a zero sum game.jillybee72 wrote:What is it about egotism that draws egotism out of most everyone who encounters it? It's seductive.

This is the FIRST year of what is sure to become an Austin institution. We really want things to go well. We are REALLY going to depend on the dedication of the dedicated few to make things run fluidly. We’re not gonna lie to you – we’re asking a lot. We’re looking for people who are willing to own this event; those who will play host to our guests. We are giving first dibs priority to those who will work 3 or more shifts over the 4 day festival.
hmm...
What about those who would like to help out in any way but know their offer will be rejected? I support your efforts in all ways, but its kind of humiliating. Im sure you guysll muster

Re: hmm...
Seems a little strong. If they can get the help they need from "full-time" volunteers then more power to 'em. It's how I'd do it.BriHo wrote:What about those who would like to help out in any way but know their offer will be rejected? I support your efforts in all ways, but its kind of humiliating.
