i am so sad to hear about phil's passing.
i remember watching him for the first time in the twofer on Friday nights when he was just out of high school and still playing with Comedic Amoeba.
he was one of those people you saw early on and were like "this dude has got it". like, just one of those powerhouses that was destined to go on to big comedic things. he was exceptionally talented. more than that, we was a good soul.
my heart goes out to family and close friends of phil's.

I have many memories of Phil. one was how dedicated and awesome the whole crew of you me and greg was running tech for that kazillionaire sketch show I did in 2006. they wore my cupholder jumpsuits: Doug in blue, greg in orange, and Phil in red. they ran lights, sound, video, box office, and stage managed, and all with beaming smiles. we really needed that support and they were very awesome and gracious in offering to help.
my other fond memory is co-directing blue maestro with him. He directed the game 'Sit, Stand, Having an abortion' and I remember it not really working out but being an awesome, hilarious experiment nonetheless.
Phil was a lot of fun. I wish I could have done more stuff with him. he was one of those guys that always came up with the coolest, most brilliant ideas. it's sad to think he won't doing that any more.

I can't believe I was able to log in to this.
Just so you know, Phil hadn't changed hardly at all, other than being smarter and happier, I think. Like Kareem said on Facebook, he had gotten his shit together. He had lost weight, he moved downtown, he had a look for himself that he really liked, he was able to work on whatever he wanted to and he knew that he knew the most wonderful people. Every time we brought up someone from the improv community, or musicians, friends, old high school acquaintances, he always had something nice to say about them, some fond memory. He'd mention a yearning to go back there and relive those moments but would say he was very content with where he was in life at the same time. Phil wanted to do everything he loved at once, see everyone he loved every day, and to make everyone laugh or at least think a little harder about something. But he was also very realistic and thankful that he had everything to look back on.
It's going to be hard for everyone to accept this reality. But in the last several times I had hung out with him, he seemed to have moved on from caring about the things that everyone else worries about. His sister posted that she thinks he's singing to the stars and chatting with nebulas right now, and I would be surprised if he wasn't. His mind was just getting too big to be contained anymore, perhaps.
I love you guys and I miss all of you. It's sad that things like this have to happen to to such wonderful families and communities.

I remember the first time I saw the PITS kids, under Phil's direction. I affectionately nicknamed them "Jury Babies." They were all so nice and so committed, and soaked up every bit of everything they could. You could tell right away that Phil was a really intelligent dude who could do anything he wanted. He was always really, really nice to me, and I always looked forward to seeing him, no matter how long it had been.
I'm so sorry to you, Doug, Greg, and Kaci. I love you all.

Phil
I'm new here, but I couldn't resist sharing a couple of thoughts about Phil.
I first met him back in 2006. I'd cornered the market on "funny slam poetry" in Austin for a few years, and then one night, Phil shows up to the Austin Poetry Slam and just ANIHILATES everyone. He was so goddamn funny. And authentic. And he did what I never could: move people with his humor. It wasn't just shtick and cheap jokes (like me); it was authentic, sincere, REAL poetry. I recognized right away that this guy ... this guy was the real deal.
Over the years he and I would bump into each other at various poetry-type events, and every time he was energetic and kind and curious and, of course, funny. Just so fucking funny.
I wish I'd made an effort to make him a closer friend, because from what I read by others today, his friendship was a thing to be deeply treasured. I'll miss him still.
And as I embark into my own improv future, I'll use him as an example of how to do art correctly: with passion, with kindness, and with sincerity.
Goodbye, buddy.

And the night he became George Washington Carver onstage, well...I knew we'd be friends forever after.
He was sincere, smart, provocative, talented, generous, willing to do anything for the audience, and always trying to make others laugh--even when he had other and stressful things going on in his own life.
The day we asked him to be in Parallelogramophonograph, we asked him to meet us after class: "...just four friends having a friendly little chat. Come alone. Unarmed. No mics. Bring small, unmarked bills."
He did.
And so began the start of a journey none of us ever expected.
Though we didn't speak as often as I would have liked these last few years, Phil always meant a lot to me and he will be sorely missed.
If there's ever some sort of Memorial Maestro for the man, I'd be honored to have a spot and pay him homage.
Unless, of course, it is Future Maestro.

Saturday Coordinating
For anyone interested, Phil Aulie's Celebration Service will be Tuesday, Feb 7 @ 6 pm @ Riverbend Remembrance Garden Chapel. It's located just west of the 360 Bridge.
In addition to this, we are putting together a show that will benefit Phil's family with 100% of the profits from the night. The probable date is Thursday, February 23rd at 9 PM at the ND at 501 Studios. It's located one block East of I-35 on the corner of Brushy Street and East 5th, the actual address being 501 North IH-35, Austin, TX, 78702.
We'd like to use this night to celebrate everything Phil loved, Slam Poetry, Improv, Theatre, Music, and People. I don't have solid contacts in the Slam scene, but I figured I'd throw out the option on here if anyone wants to put together an improv segment for the night.
There will be at meeting at the ND this Saturday, the 4th at 4:30 PM. It'd be great if anyone from the Improv scene could attend and flesh out a few details for the basic scheduling of the night and so on. And if you can't make it, no worries, I'm sure there will be information online shortly after the meeting.
