Third Annual Improv Summit at Hyde Park Theatre

Post by ratliff »

So I guess it's a tradition now: every year about this time The Glamping Trip (David Hess and myself) take over Hyde Park Theatre for a night and put three of our favorite groups onstage. One of which is us. The other two of which (this year) are Pgraph and The Frank Mills.

We originally started doing this to try to introduce grounded improv to people who had never seen it before, and it's worked pretty well: every year a good portion of the crowd are first-timers. They seem to leave pretty happy and some of them come back to see more improv at one theater or another. Mission accomplished.

But for improvisers it's also a rare chance to see two of the best groups in town play together on the same bill. (We're not going to say three of the best. That would be asking for trouble.) The Frank Mills and Pgraph have both won B. Iden Payne Awards from the greater Austin theater community, but more importantly they're the gold standard at their respective home theaters, ColdTowne and The Hideout.

So if you've been taking classes but haven't yet ventured out to other theaters yet, this might be a relatively painless opportunity to see what's going on beyond the perimeters of your sector.

Everything else aside, this will probably be a pretty good show, and afterward we can all hang out and eat pizza and drink beer across the street. So, y'know: fun!

We would love to see you there.

They are not! Because this is a scrappy, old-school, let's-put-on-a-show production, and because someone would have to keep track of that.
