An improv workout at Coldtowne

Post by kliphtin »

Hello Austin improvisers!

Some of you I know well, some of us are newly acquainted, but there are many of you that I don't know yet, and we should change that.

I would like to invite all of you to begin a "free" improv workout with me from 2-4pm on Sunday, OCT 23 at The Coldtowne Theater. There will be another opportunity in 2 weeks, but everyone should take Mick's class that week instead.

I am looking for improvisers who like improv and want to get better by playing more often.

Hope to see you soon.

Regards,
Clifton Highfield

In the meantime, shouldn't you register for that Mick Napier workshop?

[ GRACE TREY ]
Female, 18 years old, Caucasian or Latin. (ACTRESS MUST BE 18 OR OLDER TO PLAY SCREEN AGE OF 18. ACTOR/SINGER IS PREFERRED BUT STRONG ACTING IS MORE IMPORTANT. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT THE ACTRESS PLAYING "GRACE" HAVE A STRONG FAITH CONNECTION TO THE ROLE AND MATERIAL.) Grace is a beautiful 18 year old All American girl on her way to becoming a pop music star. She is free-spirited, yet mature beyond her years. She has a strong foundation of faith and has been very active in the worship music at her church, but she dreams of something bigger. Despite knowing her father's stories about his rise and fall in the main-stream music biz, she is certain it would be different for her, if she could only get the chance to prove it. She loves her parents and has been close with her Dad, but they are growing more distant because she doesn't want to be held back from her dreams just because his crashed and burned. LEAD. To submit your audition go to http://actorscall.com/cf8dd.
[ JOHNNY TREY ]
Male, 48 to 55 years old, Caucasian or Latin. (RECOGNIZABLE NAME/FACE PREFERRED) Johnny is handsome and charming. You can see the "rock star" quality in him, but his spiritual journey in recent years has stripped away the pretense and arrogance, leaving a genuinely likable guy. Johnny was a "one hit wonder" back in the day, but was chewed up and spit out by the music biz. But he has since found a much more meaningful use for his talents, leading worship and writing songs for a local church. His daughter Grace is his pride and joy and he loves having her by his side in the worship band each Sunday. He sees how talented she is and knows that she dreams of being a big music star, but he is protective of her because of his own bad experiences in the music biz. But the more he tries to protect her, the more she insists on doing her own thing. He feels her slipping away and it is breaking his heart. LEAD. To submit your audition go to http://actorscall.com/szs5z.

[ MICHELLE TREY ]
Female, 40s, Caucasian or Latin. (RECOGNIZABLE NAME/FACE PREFERRED) She is Johnny's wife and Grace's mom. She is naturally beautiful with just a hint of the "rock star groupie" she was when she and Johnny first met and fell in love. But since then, she and Johnny have both found a different focus for their lives as a result of their faith, and she now spends much of her time with her family and involved at their church. She sees a lot of herself in Grace – the adventurer, wanting to get out and experience the world – but she also hopes to save Grace from some of the struggles she experienced herself. With the recent tension between Grace and Johnny, Michelle finds herself in the middle as a peacemaker and mediator. She sees and understands both sides, and prays that God will bring them back together as a family again. STRONG SUPPORTING

[ QUENTIN ]
Male, 22, Caucasian. Quentin is an intern at the LA music label where Grace ends up. He is nice looking, but has a natural humility that is even more attractive. He loves the music industry and he is also a person of faith, so he hopes to find a way to bring the two together, rather than having to choose one or the other. He is the kind of friend that people would love to have – honest, loyal, down-to-earth and has a sense of humor that can put a smile on your face when you need it. STRONG SUPPORTING

[ FRANK "MOSSY" MOSTIN ]
Male, 40s, Any Ethnicity. (RECOGNIZABLE NAME/FACE PREFERRED) Mossy is a "has been" talent manager in the music business. He discovered and managed Johnny Trey back in the day, but since Johnny left the industry Mossy has had little success. But that is about to change with the renewed interest in Johnny's one hit song, and the discovery that Johnny's daughter Grace is the perfect person to make it a hit again. He is determined to make her a star (and himself rich), regardless what it takes to make it happen. LEAD

[ RACHEL ]
Female, 18 yrs. old, Any Ethnicity. Rachel is Grace's best friend. She thinks Grace in incredibly talented and wants to see her do well, but she also is not afraid to tell her the truth when she messes up which helps keep Grace grounded. SUPPORTING

[ TIM BRYANT ]
Male, 50s, Caucasian, Latin or African American. He is the pastor of the church where Johnny, Grace and Michelle attend. But he and his wife Sharon are also good friends with the Trey's as well. Tim and Johnny talk a lot about fatherhood and the challenges that come with that, and Tim is a source of encouragement and accountability for Johnny through his struggles with Grace. He is sincere and compassionate, and he is able to give feedback without it feeling like judgment. SUPPORTING

[ SHARON BRYANT ]
Female, 50s, Caucasian, Latin or African American. Her husband Tim is the lead pastor of the church where Johnny, Grace and Michelle attend. But she and her husband are good friends with the Trey's as well. They've seen each other through some difficult life challenges and now she is trying to be a listening ear for Michelle and Johnny as they try to figure out how to deal with Grace's rebellion. SUPPORTING

[ JAY GRAYSON ]
Male, 22 to 25 years old. Caucasian. (RECOGNIZABLE NAME/FACE PREFERRED) He is currently the "it" young actor in Hollywood. He is completely self consumed and will do anything (and use anybody) to keep his star rising. He finds Grace attractive so he doesn't mind being a part of Mossy's plan get her some media attention, but he is used to getting what he wants when he wants it, especially from women, so Grace's resistance grows tiresome to him. STRONG SUPPORTING

[ KENDRA MADDOX ]
Female, late 30s, Any Ethnicity. She is the image and style expert at Sapphire music and she is very good at what she does. She has "created" many artists that have gone on to have huge careers, and Grace is her newest project. She is beautiful and sophisticated, and Grace is drawn to her confidence and strength. She has learned to be tough in order to succeed in what is a very cut throat industry, but she is still able to relate to Grace with a "sisterly" kindness that puts Grace at ease. STRONG SUPPORTING

[ CANDY MIX ]
Female, 25 to 28 years old, Any Ethnicity. She is a famous pop-star and Grace is a huge fan. Grace's dream is to have the kind of career that Candy has so when she actually meets Candy it is a big deal. Candy knows how to use the system to get where she needs to be, and although she is generally a likable person, she is not above using the people around her to further her career. Candy sees a lot of talent in Grace and offers her some advice on how to play the game, assuming that Grace's "innocent ways" are just another gimmick because certainly no one can really be that naïve. SUPPORTING

[ MARK REYNOLDS ]
Male, 40s, Any Ethnicity. He is the President of Sapphire Records, the label where Grace is signed. He knows the music business very well and he knows what it takes to be successful. Despite having worked his way up through the ranks to the top position, he has maintained his integrity and is well respected in the industry. He has a great eye for talent, is very smart and knows a good investment when he sees (or hears) it. STRONG SUPPORTING

[ RICK ]
Male, early 50s, Caucasian. He and Donna are Quentin's parents. They are "salt of the earth" kind of people – sincere and straight forward but without casting judgment. Their faith is very important to them and they raised Quentin with those same values. They are familiar with Grace and her father Johnny from a concert they did at their church, and they were very touched by Johnny's testimony and his music. LINES

[ DONNA ]
Female, early 50s, Caucasian. She and Rick are Quentin's parents. They are "salt of the earth" kind of people – sincere and straight forward but without casting judgment. Their faith is very important to them and they raised Quentin with those same values. They are familiar with Grace and her father Johnny from a concert they did at their church, and they were very touched by Johnny's testimony and his music. LINES

[ YOUNG GRACE ]
Female, 8 years old, Caucasian or Latin. (Performer must be able to play guitar or at least be able to fake it proficiently) She is Grace as a little girl, who even at her young age showed incredible talent and promise as a musician. She adores her dad (Johnny) and loves spending time with him playing guitar and singing. LINES

[ SALLY BENSON ]
Female, late 40s, Any Ethnicity. She is a very influential internet super-blogger. She writes a gossip column for the most popular TMZ type website. She's not impressed with the glitz and glamour of fame. She's just looking for the next lead story. She can have a certain crankiness about her. LINES

[ ZACH FREELEY ]
Male, 40s, Caucasian or Latin. He is the host of a late night talk show, sort of a Jay Leno type, but the budget version. Grace appears on his show and surprises everyone with a new song. LINES

[ TOMMY ]
Male, 50s, Any Ethnicity. He is the owner of a night club where Grace plays when she is first out in LA. He gives her a shot as a favor to Mossy. LINES

[ RECITAL ANNOUNCER ]
Female, 40s, Any Ethnicity. She is a music teacher and a mom-type who is the emcee of the recital where Grace's student, Noah, is playing. LINES

[ KENDRA'S ASSISTANT ]
Female, 28 to 32 years old, Any Ethnicity. Currently she is a little "plain Jane" but you can see hints of a "Kendra" underneath. She is hoping to one day do what Kendra does but for now she is a reliable and capable assistant. LINES

[ NOAH ]
Male, 9 yrs. old, Any Ethnicity. (Performer must be able to play guitar or at least fake it proficiently.) He is a young guitar student who takes lessons from Grace. He likes having her as his teacher and he always works to make her proud, which makes it all the more disappointing when she doesn't show up to his recital. LINES

STORY LINE: Grace Trey is an 18 year old singer/songwriter. Beautiful, highly talented and restless, Grace is so far undiscovered outside of her church. She performs there each Sunday with her gifted father Johnny, the worship leader. A former rock star, Johnny Trey charted a Billboard top five single 20 years before. Then, the hits stopped coming and he crash landed hard, a one hit wonder. But since then Johnny found Christ and a new life for his family, far from the Hollywood Hills. One day without warning, Grace leaves for Los Angeles and with the help of Johnny's ethically challenged former manager, Bob Mossy, she lands a record deal. Mossy sees in Grace a potential pop superstar and of course, a massive pay check. On the verge of achieving her biggest dream, Hollywood stardom, Grace must decide if the dream is worth it, or comes at much too high a cost.

Sooooo, what do the quotes around the word "free" mean? Is it actually free? Should I be reporting you to http://www.unnecessaryquotes.com/ ?

Technically, it costs two hours of your time as well.

Report whatever you like, but improvising from 2-4pm on Sunday will cost more energy than time, and I hope you spend a lot.

Okay, so I'm hearing it really is (monetarily) free. I generally interpret quotation marks to mean "…but not really," e.g. Try the spinach smoothie, it's "delicious!"
