I was wondering what playlists people have programmed in their mp3 players and what's behind them.
For instance, here are some I have:
"character" - I use music a lot in my classes as an inspiration for improv. a lot of songs with strong intros, ones that give a sense of tone right away like Aimee Mann's "Wise Up" and Strawberry Alarm Clock's "Incense and Peppermints"
dreams - I had a dream themed movie night where we just showed our favorite dream sequences from movies, I had dream-themed foods (like stuff wrapped in bacon or stuff with a sweet kick), and I made a playlist with stuff like "Just Dropped In" and "Life on Mars"
for Virginia - I made a playlist of songs to give to my 14-yr old niece. all she had on her iPod at the time was the complete works of the Beatles and the soudtrack to Wicked so I thought I would expand it for her. It was really hard to find a mix that would not be too aggressively charged or inappropriate in some way while still being fun and showcasing a lot of female talent (really hard when you're avoiding aggressively charged music). The end result had some Fleetwood Mac, Eisley, Regina Spektor, Simon & Garfunkel, The Cure and a mix of other stuff.
So what's on your iPod?
Your playlists
Everything else, basically.

Oh boy! Oh boy! Oh boy!
ON MY iTUNES RIGHT NOW:
2011 - A yearly mix tape project. Each month a track is selected and added to the list. This track must be a) Something that I haven't heard until the month in question. b) Something that inspires me. At the end of the year, my friends get a 12 track mix tape "Sarah Marie Year in Review" And they give me one too!
1001 radiohead 0110 - The first ten tracks of Okay Computer and In Rainbows inter injected (Airbag followed by 10 Steps followed by Paranoid Android etc...) mixed with a ten sec crossfade. It's pretty darn neat. There's a whole Radiohead Conspiracy about the similarities between the two albums.
Music for a Mockingjay - A musical mixtape following the major emotional beats of The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins
Mourning Method - A mix I'm working on for listening in the mornings before work.
Zebra's Burnt Butter - A daily mix tape dumping ground for the albums I listen to at work everyday. I use this to do a shuffle in itunes dj
Ya! I loved sharing this with you!

I like to generate playlists that connect songs by theme, by artist, by composer, by title, by lyric, etc., for example, connecting Dylan to Tom Verlaine by way of Johnny Cash, Nick Lowe, the Raincoats, the Kinks, Robyn Hitchcock, Grant Lee Phillips, the Byrds, the Beatles, Elvis Costello, Patsy Cline, & Doug Sahm.
I have a lot of those.
Also purely thematic lists like "Bugs," "Wind," "Ghosts," "Disconnections," or "Denial & Avoidance."
And some stylistic lists, like one of waltzes or another of Bo Diddley Beat.
There are some things I keep on my iPod constantly, just in case the need should ever arise: Feelies, Mekons, Small Stars, Joanna Newsom, Replacements.
I carried Blonde on Blonde and Blood on the Tracks for a long time, just in case of emergency, but took them off recently to make room for other stuff.
