Who are you? Who hoo? Who hooo?

Post by erikamay »

That was for "the Who" fans in the hizzouse...bits aside, i wanted to post this to get an idea of improv teams in town.

I have counted a total of 8 active teams/houses that I know of, and listed them below...if you have other of which I am not aware, holla back (i'm curious about active numbers):

wooden nickel (long form)
heroes of comedy (short form/long form)
maestro (is this separate from heroes, or a show that heroes puts on?)
polite society (long form?)
comedic ameoba (short form)
tight (long form)
girls, girls, girls (long form, musical)
24 (long form)

there have to be some college groups out there...
erika

(and kudos to apthorpe for getting the forums so nice and organized!)

Micetro/Maestro is one format put on by the Heroes, though there are so many guest players and guest directors anymore it's difficult to classify it as an actual Heroes show. So maybe it's a distinct entity -- it's hard to tell.

The only other college (UT) troupe that I know of is Gigglepants. The last troupe to come out of St. Ed's was the amazingly energetic Fatbuckle but they've since turned their attentions to sketch and transmogrified into Think Tank.

Well, even thought we have not played in a while, there is The Deuce which is Erin Plischke and Jennifer Cargill (long form). Better dust off that show.......

FWIW, I posted links to local troupes on news.austinimprov.com in the easy-to-miss Bookmark section on the sidebar. It's not a complete list since I only listed those troupes with websites:

Available Cupholders (Chicago)
Foolish Mortals
Gigglepants
Girls Girls Girls
Heroes of Comedy
Massive Creativity (Houston)
Oxymorons (San Antonio)
Tight
The Venue (Midland)
Wooden Nickel

Once upon a time, Ed32 and the Well Hung Jury had websites but they seem to be defunct at present. What sites/troupes am I missing?

Improv troupes

Post by sara farr »

- "24 min" is a form that the 2-man troupe "Get Up" performs. "Get Up" is Shannon McCormick & Shana Merlin.
- "Comedic Amoeba" lost 3 of their 6 members, and now go by the name, "You, Me, & Greg" (and includes Phil, Doug, & Greg)
- Did you list Jeremy Lamb's "Beadered Lamb"? http://beardedlamb.com/

Phil here, from the now totally defunct Comedic Amoeba.

We really don't exist anymore at all. But Sara was completely right in including that we do now exist as a totally revamped troupe known as You Me & Greg.

I know of another improv troupe in which I am slightly involved, but they don't have a name yet and are definitely still in New Troupe Limbo for now, more details on that later.

And I know that both of them are also in Tight, but would McNichols and May count as another troupe? I hope so, because they rock.

Ed32 is defunct. The Polite Society is, I think, entirely ex-Eds. Available Cupholders is largely ex-Jury.

And watch out everyone, Karrem, Roy, Wes, Phil, and I are starting a troupe which is not yet named. We're planning on doing plot and character driven long form. I think.

There's also theoretically a Mike D'Alonzo and Craig Kotfas troupe going by The Knuckleball Now.
And my troupe's official title is Polite Society Presents.

I think they'll be a hit, as long as they keep their troupe name to something eight syllables or less.

This is kind of mind-blowing, I think. I know individual people who are in 8 troupes/projects now.

Mind. Blown.

In just 6 years Austin improv went from a handful of troupes to what it is today??

... Guys, I think we're right on schedule for our plans of world domination.
