I thought of that, but didn't want to go down the NBA path again.

Damn political correctness. Not even the internet will let us be all stereotypical on the world........

I agree with all the people who want to keep cyber-anonymity. I would have done it too, had I thought of it when I first started using the internet.

But using just your first name causes really no issues. I really don't think ANYBODY will be able to find you by searching for "Brad" or "Jordan" or "Robin". You'd have to go through millions of pages first of Brad Pitt, Michael Jordan (and female model Jordan) and Robin Hood and Batman&Robin! Hell, you can search for Menelaos and you will still never find this specific forum!

I am wondering now though, what will I find if I google "Kareem"....

On the other hand, if you google the phrase I usually use for my handle ("monkeyangst"), you will find out a lot about me.

Let's see, on Google you'll discover that I:
  • * Have a twitter account
    * Created a political webcomic (and ran a collective of them at spinzonecomics.com)
    * Like Babylon 5 (edited a page on the B5 wiki)
    * Have a LiveJournal last updated in 2008
    * Am a liberal (dailykos.com account)
    * Like to waste my time (cheezburger.com account)
    * Lived in France and know Jeanne Tripplehorn (flickr account)
    * Use Dreamhost for my web hosting
    * Am very lonely (OKCupid account)
Wow, that's actually a lot, and that's only the first page of results.

You'd get about a million pages of info on former basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, I'm sure. So yeah, pretty safe for purposes of anonymity.

Of course, the "first name only" option only works up to a point. We have several Davids, I'm sure several Michaels, etc., and heck, we even have at least two Rubys so far. And some people want to be reeeeally anonymous, for whatever reason(s). 'S all cool.

I considered making my user name more specific, like "Robin Anderson" or even just "Robin A.". To be honest, I settled on first name only just because, as someone with a really common name (last time I checked, there were three Robin Andersons in Austin alone), it felt really amazingly novel to be able to claim first-ies on just good ol' plain "Robin". :-)

You know. I have never googled myself; but mpbrockman leads you to a couple of Vimeo pages, a number of references to this site, a crapload of references to my blog and strangely - an article on coronary bypass having nothing to do with me.
