2011 goals

Post by mpbrockman »

OK - here it is.

2010 had it's ups and downs, but I've had much worse years. No real complaints.

Goals for 2011:

-Finish hauling my SO out of debt (no telling I posted that!). Good progress was made in 2010, but I'm tired of intentionally living poor. I want to end the year in the black on all fronts with an eye towards being able to buy a house here in 2012-13.

-Spend more time communicating with my daughter. Maybe even try to schedule more than one or two visits this year. Maybe even bring her here to Austin (if the Wicked Witch of the West - i.e. my ex - will consent).

-Travel a little more. EFF whetted my appetite to, while certainly not travel full-time again, at least keep my options a little more open in that department. I've been automatically turning down almost every gig that required more than a day's travel for 4-5 years.

-Finish 15-20 of the songs I've been writing/recording/polishing, get them up on my website and re-connect with some of the industry people I used to know. Maybe put out my first real CD since 2000 or so.

-Get my teeth well and truly fixed. No more of this patchwork sh*t. I want a real smile back (and finally be free of chronic pain) by the middle of this year.

-Learn a song a day, write a song a week (nothing new there, that's been my SOP for 20+ years).

-Spend less time working on humanistic v. theistic writing and activism and more time on political writing and activism (except where they overlap). Well, writing really is my only form of activism - I'm not a marcher - so I guess that's a little redundant. I find myself more concerned these days with politics (and the money that runs it) than I do creeping religious fundamentalism (and the moderates who give it philosophical cover). Of course, my stance that the Reagan revolution was the genesis of our current set of predicaments is going to be a tough sell too (despite being backed up by hard numbers).

-Awright, dammit, quit smoking. (Just typing that sentence led me to go outside for a smoke break)

-Learn to edit video competently.

-To win (for the 3rd consecutive time) an improvisor fantasy football league.

-Never forget that the only constant is change; and if I end 2011 living in a yurt somewhere in Kyrgyzstan minus a couple of toes I shouldn't be the least bit surprised.

-Be content.

Quick list:

--Get to the weight I was at my skinniest 5 years ago... and then lose a couple more, just to show myself I can

--Do more singing performances: written AND improv

--Make at least 3 puppets.

--Read a book a month, at least

--Do several century bike rides, including Hill Country Ride for AIDS and Texas MammaJamma (breast cancer)

--Get my muscles out of their unending knots, with the help of my massage therapist

--Start writing non-marketing-dreck stuff again

--Rekindle meditation and yoga regularly

--Try to make moments more meaningful, plan rest and reflection into each day, and be more patient with myself and those around me

right now, these are just "start of the year" goals, things i'd like to get done in the next month or two. all other subsequent goals rely heavily on these being accomplished, so i reserve the right to return to this thread throughout the year and add more goals as they arise. :P

-get my own apartment and move out of my parents' farm

-get Texas massage license again; begin practicing again

-find a good kung fu school in town; start training again

-slim down some of the cuddle padding and get back down to a slightly svelter 235 or possibly even 230

-start getting into the VO market out here

-start auditioning for scripted work again

-START WRITING AGAIN!
