Re: The Voice Auditions

Hey! What happened with this?

Re: Game?

Players knowing what the game is at the top of the scene only applies to one format.

The Armando.

There's room for the game to be tight or loose here. I come onstage with you and have to "figure out" what your idea is.

You could argue that this also applies to later scenes of a Harold or ...

Re: Does Anybody Wanna Talk about Word Association?

But where does word association actually happen inside of an improv scene? I promise I'm not trying to be difficult about it, I'm just confused. I can't think of a show I've seen where one improviser stopped listening to the context of what was being said and just randomly went down a new path ...

Re: Does Anybody Wanna Talk about Word Association?

I'm just confused as to what you're referring to in the initial post with word association. Word association in general? Or just word association as it pertains to an exercise or an opening like the pattern game? I don't see a lot of word association happening within scenework.

You are correct ...

Re: Question about the Improv Companies here in Austin.

I believe UCB holds auditions after a certain class level, first in order for that student to continue taking classes, then to cast that student in a house troupe.

This structure is fairly common, yeah? Improv Olympic and Annoyance too? Not certain but Im pretty sure about UCB.

Brad Temple, is ...

Re: A to C

More importantly, A to C thinking is a way to do improv inspired by the suggestion without having to shoehorn the suggestion into a scene. If "pineapple" makes you think of a tropical island and a tropical island makes you think of a tiki bar, you could start a scene set in a tiki bar and it would ...

Re: A to C

Regarding the overall relationship between patterns - I think youll find alot of people here who are interested.

You might have to preface with Harold but everyone basically knows and likes variations on a pattern. Few would disagree that pattern is a basic unit of comedy.
I agree with a lot of ...

Re: A to C

So, I have been reading and considering a lot of the A to C stuff in the UCB Manual, experimenting with exercises, dwelling on what works, and attempting to reconcile my own play by combining what I have learned in the past with new insights from the book.

These are the pages that reference A to C ...

jillybee72 wrote:Editing the scene is always an option as well.
Agreed. This is often the best kind of support you can do from off-stage.

Re: I figured out my main problem..would like some help plea

I think Neal has the right idea. Jams are low-risk settings to play with people you don't normally play with, as you mentioned. As long as you're staying true to the spirit behind supporting the people on stage (only entering to support when the scene clearly needs it), it's better to get out there ...

Re: Besser notes

Hmm -- these are probably not the notes youre looking for...

Yeah, he returned to Austin in October 2011 to promote Freak Dance at Austin Film Festival and did a brief lecture at SVT. If anything, it seems like an evolved version of the lecture from your notes. I remember him talking about ...

Re: Besser notes

The pattern game is one of my favorite topics. You haven't lived until you've spent an entire three-hour class practicing it. Josh, email me if you have any questions in particular.

Re: Last Classes with Dave Buckman for 2013

Dave is a great teacher! If you're on the fence about it, I urge you to give it a try.

Re: UCB coming to Stateside 11/20-23

It's a rotating cast TourCo, so it probably wouldn't be fair to base any speculation on the last times they've been to town. Whether or not you think it's worth the asking price is probably going to be contingent on the level to which you enjoy the UCB style of improv.

Well I only saw UCB once ...

Re: Did Facebook kill the forum?

Let me backtrack, since I just got an email reply, and say I mostly meant to agree with the part where you could select all the new/unread posts on the forum, instead of having to go to each subforum.

When you log into the forums, above the subforum for announcements, you should have options to ...
