Stay-cation

Post by vine311 »

I'm taking all of next week off for my birthday. Originally I was going to be out of town and having amazing adventures and such. Unfortunately, life kind of got in the way and now I find myself with a week off but not a lot of money to travel and such. So, I've decided that I want to go out and do all of the things this town has to offer that I rarely have time for.

My question to you guys is... If you had a week off to explore Austin, what would you do? I've got a list myself, but I'd like to see what suggestions you guys have.

Wow, awesome!!!

Have you ever taken a tour of the capitol? I have not, but that building seems like it would be pretty cool.

Also, take a nice cool walk through the zilker botanical gardens. I was only there once, before i moved here, but i remember it was pretty serene.

Also, you could do a bbq survery and hit all of the bbq joints around town and outside town. Then let everyone know the pros and cons and honorable mentions. Besides, when else would you be able to sleep off all those meat comas?

Go out to the lake and play in the water, cap it with a drink at the oasis at sunset.

The bob bullock is really quite an interesting museum. As is the natural history museum on campus. And the Blanton.

I agree with the BBQ - adventure.

I'd also hit a different live music venue every night, just for the joy of it.

For me, I'd also grab a stack of books and read in different shady places all over town.

Schedule lunch, coffee, etc. with different friends just to catch up.

Let's do lunch, dude! Do it real hard. And then never call it again.

I agree with this statement. Heartily.

Let's eat hearts!

Also, check out the free midnight screenings at The Alamo. For instance, check out the next Terror Tuesday installment, Pieces. Misogynist, racist, violent fun!

Or you could try the Dionysium. I've always wanted to do that.

I always wanted to do the BBQ idea but with chicken fried steaks.

If you've never done a full day of Zilker, then you have to: 1) Ride the tiny train. 2) Rent a canoe down the steps from the eastern playground and see nature (turtles on logs!) and 2.5) bring bread with you so you can feed the ducks. 3) Cold spring cave swimming plus ogling the tanning UT students which correspond to your sexual preference. 4) Bbq at one of the picnic areas 5) Fresh cotton candy. 6) Fly a kite or kick a ball or throw a frisbee or play frisbee golf. 7) Stroll through the botanical garden.

ZILKER IS MAGICAL!

Oh and if you've never been out to Laguna Gloria Austin Museum of Art. That's pretty nice.

The Museum of Natural and Artifical Ephemerata (not far from SVT) - great silly bizarre fun presented with deadpan serious showmanship. Sit in the elevated school desk in the yard and feel real tall.

The Elisabet Ney Musuem in Hyde Park - often overlooked, nice little place; interesting character and artist she was.

Duck Tour of Austin

UT Tower tour

Carver Museum -- I did not know there was so much more than peanuts to George Washington Carver

Cathedral of Junk -- I have not been here yet but it sounds worth a shot

Find the bullet marks in the stone balustrade on UT's South Mall, from Charles Whitman's bullets

LBJ Library and Museum -- cooler than it may sound

Tandem jump at Skydive Temple in Salado (not Austin, but it's the same sky and it's only 45 minutes away and is a very worthwhile birthday activity.)

I also think the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum is terrific, as is their IMAX "Story of Texas" film (believe it or not!). You can easily spend half a day there if history is your thing. Don't miss the short films tucked into little alcoves throughout the museum. I especially enjoy the one about how cowboys are portrayed on film.

If the visual arts interest you, Now Playing Austin has great listings (of that and lots of other forms of entertainment).

Be sure to pick up a copy of the Austin Chronicle tomorrow (or read it online). It's published on Thursdays. Their calendar pages are filled with ideas.

These are all great.

Might I also suggest going to The Broken Spoke for a cultural experience.
