FACT OF THE DAY: On December 6, 1917 (one hundred years ago today), the cargo ship SS Mont Blanc collided with another ship in the harbor of Halifax, Nova Scotia and caught fire. 20 minutes later, the Mont Blanc’s cargo of explosives for World War I detonated, causing an explosion roughly one-fifth as powerful as the Hiroshima atomic bomb. Approximately 2,000 people were killed and an area one mile in radius was completely destroyed. After the explosion, the Mont Blanc’s 1100-pound anchor shaft was found 2.3 miles away.
