Nailing the Organic Scene Start

I get more and more comfortable participating in scenes, but I still struggle and get in my head when it comes to scene initialization. Of course I want a scene with good characters, relationship, objectives, etc. but how do I do this all quickly and organically? In particular, how do I get to my character's 'want' while making good choices and without trying to be clever?

Honestly, you don't do it quickly. You'll just get better at being ok with not knowing, and not showing the audience the fact that you have no *earthly* idea what's going on.

As you get more experienced, you will get faster at recognizing the small offers that will imply things about the relationship or your motivations. You might not know the exact details immediately, but you'll get a feeling (positive, negative, happy, sad, trusting, angry) and play from that and trust that the details of who/where/why will emerge eventually.

You make strong choices and then can justify them retroactively. It doesn't all come to you, regardless of experience. But from the outside, it *looks* like it must have all sprung into being, fully-formed.

Start in the middle of the scene and identify the other person in the first line you say. Focus on his identity ..he should focus on yours and identify you quickly as well. Make an outrageous assumption about the relationship and behave accordingly, trusting that he will support you....you are too focused on you ..the other actor is your savior.
