Hey Ya'll,

I'm looking to start a DFW improv forum. I have never started a forum before and I was wondering if anyone happened to have any advice on a good free forum service?

Thank you.

Yeah, if you don't yet have a web-hosting company to host the site, a lot of hosts have phpBB built in so you don't have to do anything, just turn it on. Look for one that offers that as part of the package.

I know Dreamhost offers phpBB and I'm particular to them, for what it's worth. You can usually Google around for a really low first year deal.

Or you can use this link and give one of your good friends a kickback while you get a deal. (I think Kareem and someone else have kickback links around here, too. Decide who you like more, and find theirs.)

That's cool that you're setting up a forum for Dallas, Cody. What's the scene like up there these days?

Thanks for all the input, ya'll. That was uniquely kind of each of you. I'll let you know which one I decide to go with.

Andy, the scene is now at the place where it needs a forum! The Dallas Comedy House opens this month in deep ellum. Four Day Weekend is still going strong out in Ft.Worth (curtis needs a ride is still playing there regularly), but in Dallas the only other improv theater is Ad-Libs which is a short form improv theater down the street from DCH.

The Owners of the DCH are really great people, and they already have a good amount of students enrolled in classes. Previously they had been operating out of a bar/tex-mex restaurant...anyhow, the students are passionate. There haven't really even been too many shows yet...So, I'm extremely excited to see what the reaction is going to be next month when the new space is open and shows are happening regularly. My hope is that it will generate more excitement, and bring in more students.

There are a few long form troupes already in existence here; the victims, pavlov's dogs, and what is essentially a faculty troupe at the DCH. I am also hoping that the number of troupes explodes soon.

I don't recall who bumped it here, but there is going to be a Dallas improv festival coming up soon...so, I assume the goal is to move towards getting Dallas on the improv map.

Like I said, the students are super excited right now. ha...anytime they hear of anyone coming to town they say "ooooooooh, Jason Chin!" ahhhhhhhh, Jeff Griggs!". Not that those aren't names that deserve respect, but everyone has been doing improv here for such a short amount of time that it seems like quite a few people are in that HXC love affair/crack addict state of improv. So, if any of ya'll troupes down there are looking to take a road trip, I think that the students and people here would benefit from the exposure to new things.

I finally found a free service with good functionality that seems reliable. I had the person who owns dfwimprov.com redirect to my forum url.

So, ch-ch-check it out ya'll.

Thanks again for the help earlier on this post. If anyone has any feedback about the website, I'd be glad to hear it. I'm working on making it run as smoothly as possible.

Awesome!

My only feedback would be to use something besides the megaphone as the logo on the site, so that other DFW area groups like The Victims, Curtis Needs a Ride, 4-Day Weekend, etc, will feel more included.

Oh, and if there's any way to cram an RSS feed in there, it'd make it easier for lurkers like me to follow. That's how I read the Austin forum, usually. But that might be too tricky.

I'm really glad to see the DFW scene taking off so well.
