Braised in Texas: Improvised BBQ Mockumentary Auditions 2/17

Post by erikamay »

Hey everyone.

We'll be holding auditions for ColdTowne's May & June 2013 mainstage run on Sunday, February 17th from 1-3pm.

About the Show
Braised in Texas is an improvised mockumentary about a BBQ cook-off and its competitors. Source material: Hands on a Hard Body, Best in Show, Raising Arizona.

Actors will have the opportunity to play the same character for a full show, as well as cultivate and develop several characters for the run. The form will include elements of scenework and short form games woven into a loose narrative.

Auditions
Auditions will consist of short-form games, scenework and a 90 second character monologue.

Three members of the cast, and possibly a dog, have already been set. I'm looking to cast 6-8 additional players from auditions and seeking 1-2 technical improvisors.

Actors who can portray atypical characters at a BBQ cook-off/competitors (vegetarians, non-Texans, ladies of all kinds and fluent Spanish speakers) are encouraged to attend. If you choose, you can combine your monologue with another person and perform a 3 min team interview.

Rehearsals
Rehearsals will be held once weekly beginning in March through the end of April. April 21st - May 2nd, 2-3 rehearsals will be scheduled in preparation for opening.

The schedule will be determined by the collective availability of those cast and me/the AD. I do need a firm commitment on the rehearsals, process and attention from all cast members.

Shows
Saturdays, 8:30pm, May 4th - June 29th at ColdTowne Theater (no show May 25th due to Sketchfest)

There will be an opening night parking lot, pre-show event requiring a 6pm call time, but all other show calls will be at 7:45 SHHHAAARP.

Profit Sharing
All cast members will share in a 50% cut of the producer door cut.

Want to Audition?
1. Email me at erikamcnichol(at)gmail(dawt)com. I will confirm your spot within 1 day. Please note: I don't check private messages on this forum.
2. Watch the source material shows (particularly Hands on a Hard Body and Best in Show)<--This will really help your character work!
3. Think about a character or two you would like to play for an entire show and start working on it (name, walk, vocal inflection, etc.). Think about something that character feels passionate about and prepare a loose monologue around it. If you are stumped on a character or topic, let me know in your email of interest and I will be happy to make some suggestions.

It will be awesome!

And, yes, this is inspired by the form Bob and I brought for the Hideout marathon a few years back.

Auditions are filling up; please send your interest to insure a slot.

I look forward to seeing everyone!

1-3pm is full. I've opened up a new slot* from on 2/17 to accommodate interest.

Still pending confirmation from the CT scheduling crew, but I believe this will be from 4-6. Go ahead and send me an email if you want to audition and I will confirm once it's set.

Get on it if you are interested.

Another question: should the 90-second monologue / 3-minute duo interview be improvised on the spot? Or should we prepare the character(s) and monologue in advance?

Hey Kevin.

I'm not expecting a memorized monologue, but more a character you have given some thought to and get excited inhabiting.

You may have decided on a name for the character (I will ask you interview style), and then you'll have time to talk about something that character feels passionately about. Example: I know my character name is Verna Quattlebaum, she's 65 years old, is a shrewd competitor, doesn't approve of anything or anyone and loves crab cakes. I'd come prepared to talk about my favorite crab cake, and some color commentary on why it was so good. Bonus points for how crab cakes are analogous with dating older men.

Hope that helps.
